CYNTHIA KARALLA

The Portraiture

My work deals with the different aspects of the portrait - the visual analysis of the iconic images that dictate the life we are to lead. Three studies, done over the course of nine years, explore the meaning of the portrait as a manipulative/emotive and story-telling medium as it has changed over time. The first Study – BIBLICAL / ICONIC 2001-2003 – identifies the human being of the present, draped in the past. The final stages of life, depicted in the Palermo Mummies, address 'equality' as we end in decay. In the second Study – EXPERIMENTAL 2004-2007 - the depiction of the human parts proscribed as taboo, as in The Baby Grand Piano, holds the proof of individual characteristics, which are no different from the other elements of the body that are not stated as taboo. The personality portraits shot in the dark in an unknown flash of a second – in Flash - are in opposition to the long exposures that captures the energy of the individual in Move. Romancing the Blur explores the portrait beyond the surface of the body or face as it dissects the backdrop of our society, which motivates who and what we are in the third Study – ROMANTIC YEARS 2007-2009

Karalla works between the modern backdrop of New York City and the rural south of Basilicata, Italy. Her work heavily involves the participation of the local inhabitants which further demonstrates the links and differences between these two landscapes. Her work challenges both the viewer and the participants involved who are forced to question their beliefs, cultural upbringing and identity within their community.

Karalla has exhibited in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Switzerland, and Japan. Her work is included in many collections include MOMA, NY, Cooper-Hewitt Museum, NY, New York Public Library, Yokohama Museum, Japan, Daniel Katz, London, UK and Edward R. Down Jr., USA.
